The following condition report has been kindly prepared by Phil Young of Philip Young Conservation Ltd. The work is in a sound condition and apparently has a history of cracking and flaking paint, for which it has received restoration in the past. The back of the canvas has the appearance of having been treated with a consolidant or other layer, saturating and darkening the fibres up to the edges of the stretcher members. This may have also partly disturbed the inscription at the back of the canvas. There are scattered small and fairly restrained points of filling and inpainting, mainly in the upper half of the blue area, addressing paint losses around and in cracks and lifting edges of the paint. There are also lines of retouching in the white of the centre left edge and lower left corner, this relating to past abrasion. There are no large losses and the paint surface does not appear to be varnished. The canvas is flat and at a good tension and there is no apparent loss or damage to the canvas.
