Condition

The following condition report has been kindly prepared by Phil Young of Philip Young Conservation Ltd. The work is in a good and sound condition with some minor points of condition as noted below. The stretcher is the original and has the keys all present. The canvas is quite slack with corner draw distortion in the upper left corner. There is the expected light rubbing and marking around the edges, with heavier grey fingermarking in the lower left side. Lines of superficial pale dripmarks are seen and are broadly noted in the image as grey lines, (please contact the department for the image mentioned) these run across the painting from left to right and do not appear to have caused damage to the paint. Two areas of cracking caused by disturbance at the back are noted as black lines in the image, affected the upper left corner and the green of the upper right, both are raised with an accompanying distortion in the canvas. There is a dark scuff on the upper edge towards the right marked by a black circle in the image. No tests were made, but it seems likely there is a general layer of surface dirt in addition to the local marks as described. Please contact the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.

Catalogue Note

'The contemplation of pure colour holds pleasures too numerous to name…in fact there is an intense elation in allowing awareness of colour to flood the mind.'
