The following condition report has been kindly prepared by Phil Young of Philip Young Conservation Ltd. The work is in a good and sound condition with some minor points of condition as noted below. The stretcher is the original and has the keys all present. The canvas is quite slack with corner draw distortions resulting from this. There are some small raised bumps in the canvas in the upper right corner with no damage to paint. All corners have a small amount of abrasion and small paint losses. The paint is in good condition, the black areas have an appearance consistent with that of Ripolin, which has the wrinkles as seen here on drying but is stable and sound. There may be a small retouching in the lower left and upper left black applications but this is not distinct in normal or UV light. Some tissue residue is adhered to the top of the upper left black with some solid fragments adhered to the paint in places, such as the upper centre. In the lower centre is an insect trail and remains of an insect that may be mistaken as a scratch, this would have happened when the paint was still wet.
