Catalogue Note

The second arms are those of Finch, Earls of Winchilsea, probably for George Finch, 9th Earl of Winchilsea (1752-1826), who succeeded to the title upon the death of his uncle in 1769. He served with the army in the 87th Foot during the American Revolutionary War from 1776 to 1780 and is best remembered for his interest in and promotion of cricket. He was elected to the Privy Council on 14 May 1804. He was never married and dying without legitimate issue, he was succeeded by his cousin, George William Finch-Hatton, 10th Earl of Winchilsea.
