- Pen and brown ink and wash within black ink framing lines;
signed in pen and black ink lower left: Domenico Tiepolo f. - 6in. by 4¾in.
Provenance
Acquired 14 June 1978.
Condition
Laid down on card and an old mount. There are areas of discolouration and minor surface dirt to the four edges of the sheet possibly as a result of an old mount. There are signs of minor ruckling throughout the sheet and an old crease in the upper left corner, these do not however detract from the overall aesthetic of the work. The pen and ink medium is fresh throughout.

Catalogue Note
Although animals regularly appear in Giandomenico's work, either as individual studies or within larger compositions, it is rare to see the artist portraying a more detailed head study as he does in this instance. This may be explained, as J. Byam Shaw has previously highlighted1, in the fact that Giandomenico frequently used the etchings of Stefano della Bella as a source of inspiration in his own work. In this particular instance it might again be quite possible that Giandomenico has benefitted from della Bella's influence, as some close comparisons can certainly be drawn between the present sheet and the left study in an etching by della Bella of Two Horse Heads2.
