Description
- George Nakashima
- "Slab" Table
- signed with client's name
- English oak burl and American black walnut
Provenance
Acquired directly from the artist, 1968
Condition
Overall in excellent original condition. This is a wonderful small scale expressive table by Nakashima. The burl wood selected for the top is deeply figured and presents with a dramatic free edge throughout. The top presents with a more saturated and warmer caramel tone to the coloration than what appears in the catalogue illustration. There is one minor edge loss measuring 2 inches in length, which is not visible once the table is righted. This is a minor loss in a particularly thin portion of the top. The board foot is comprised of two wooden panels each with brilliantly colored sap lines, as seen in the catalogue illustration. This is wonderful detail included by Nakashima which adds depth to the overall design. There is minor edge loss at the bottom edge of the panel and to the dowel leg that is only visible upon inspection of the underside. Nakashima in the design of the rare table was able to retain the beauty of the original wood, and the table as result presents as a true work of sculpture.

Catalogue Note
Supported by a classic "Conoid" base, this "Slab" coffee table demonstrates a richly grained top with free edges, accentuated by the organic curves of dormant buds, which suggest a sense of vitality and movement in the piece. This example is rare for its smaller size and the well-defined figuration of the wood's surface.
