Condition
Overall in very good condition. This lamp is being consigned by the descendants of the original owners and by all accounts the shade, base and finial have originated together since the period. The shade with approximately 5 cracks to the glass tiles dispersed throughout, and with considerable surface soiling to the recessed contours of the shade leading, bronze wing overlays, and the natural folds and pores of the glass. All of the cabochons in the shade are in very good condition with no visible cracks. The patinated bronze surfaces of the rare Bird Skeleton base display an exceptionally deep and rich russet brown and green patina. With surface soiling to the recessed contours of the base design. The bronze surfaces show minimal surface wear and light rubbing consistent with age and gentle use. All three of the sockets and paddle switches appear to be original and undisturbed. The finial, also presumed original, is in very good condition, with only one very shallow minor surface bruise to the outer perimeter. By all accounts this lamp is in untouched original condition, and displays a superb shade and base pairing which underscores the natural fauna themes of both components. The base is an exceptional example of this rare and impressive model, displaying a particularly rich and vibrant layered patina.

Catalogue Note
The abstract, naturalistic form of the present lot’s base recalls an unusual biomorphic quality, and the Bird Skeleton model is indeed inspired by nature’s biology. First mentioned in the firm's 1906 Price List, the base was originally offered for the comparatively large sum of $90.00—attesting to its superior, complicated construction. Evocative of a bird’s delicately complex bone structure, the lamp’s base is a testament to Louis Comfort Tiffany’s strong interest in natural flora and fauna as the presiding vision for his lamp designs.
