Catalogue Note
Amongst the pool active contemporary Chinese painters, Luo Zhongli is the representative of Regional Realism. Under his leadership at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, the school became the key base of Regional Realism. The art world was shaken upon the launch of Luo Zhongli’s Father in the 1980s. His inspiration can be dated back to his early years residing at the rural areas Sichuan and Chongqing.
In 1984, the artist went to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Belgium. In the past Belgium and Netherland were referred collectively as Flanders. During the Renaissance period, art in Flanders held an equal status with Italy and nourished many exceptional artists. It was Pieter Bruegel the Elder and French artist Jean-Francois Millet whom deeply impacted on Luo. They inspired him to diverge from Photorealism and explore new territories in order to create a unique style as well as an artistic language that better expresses rural life.
After Rain’s subject matter reinforces the Luo Zhongli’s matured style after his return to China. He gained inspiration from the most common moments at the countryside and distilled the hidden inner emotions and energy. In the painting a naked man returns as the sun sets. Although his back is facing the viewers, his turban and his cane clearly reflect the living condition for villagers. The man is implicitly depicted with rough skin, thick shoulder, protruding backbone and clasped hands, conveying his indomitable spirit. The backlight, the dog beside him and the bird at the bank symbolises nature is his companion and life is not lonesome. The crimson rendering of the water in the river allowed the viewers to feel the heat, displaying a strong flair of Expressionism. Similarly, Vincent van Gogh, regarded as the pioneer of Expressionism also expressed his care towards the impoverish community in his works. Overlooking the two works, it is evident that Luo Zhongli is deeply motivated and passionate in his creations.
