The Muses are the goddesses of art and literature. In the Greek Mythologies, they are often portrayed singing, dancing, playing flute and lyre, or strolling elegantly. They are the source of artistic inspiration. The term "muse" thus becomes a synonym of women who evoke artistic creation. One of the most influential muses of modern art history, Kiki de Montparnasse (born Alice Prin) modeled for many artists in Paris in the 1920s. Sanyu, Léonard Foujita, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani have all painted her and dedicated their works to her. In 1956, when Taiwan was still relatively conservative, the first professional nude art model was Lin Si-Duan. She became the "muse" of "The Three Musketeers of Photography" - ChangTsai, Lee Ming-Tiao, Deng Nan-Guang. They examined the possibilities of photographing nudity by shooting her under different lighting, composition and themes. In these works, they emphasized the beauty of human forms in different contexts, and explored some concepts of modern art. This spring, Sotheby's is delighted to present these wonderful photographic works and '"the nude muse" in 20th Century Chinese Art sale.
