Catalogue Note
Chu Teh-Chun was highly inspired by artist Nicolas de Staël when he visited his retrospective exhibition in 1956. Although shifting his focus on Western abstract paintings after he moved to Paris, Chu’s work is still infused with his own personal characters and the Oriental essence. Completed in Chu’s early years, Composition No. 19 - Lumière obscure renders the artist’s skillful Chinese calligraphy techniques. Surrounded by heavy, symmetrical and intertwining brown and black lines, a white beam in the center of the painting emerges in a transparent background, bringing the cube-shaped gemstones shine and radiance as if they are agates. Through putting an emphasis on the center of the work and spreading out the lines in all directions, the artist successfully enhances the sense of movement and creates an extraordinary power and momentum in his art. Composition No. 19 - Lumière obscure was one of the first group of works Chu created that is over one-meter high after the artist started to develop purely abstract art in his artistic career, which demonstrates the artist’s confidence in making large-scale abstract works on canvas.
