Condition

overall in good condition with the usual wear to patina to high reliefs, the seam of construction where the flag joins the right hand shoulder of the woman is slightly visible with a very slight movement, the two pins holding the two parts together are visible

Catalogue Note

In order to commemorate the Siège of Paris, the Municipal Council organised a competition for a monument. Doré submitted the plaster original of the present work, which figured in the Vente Doré of 1885 (No.187) with the rights of reproduction. Cast in bronze in two sizes; the present model is the larger of the two versions and an exemple was exhibited in the Paris Exposition Universelleof 1889.
