Catalogue Note
The finely executed parquetry inlay and use of oak as a secondary wood are typical of high-quality Parisian cabinetmaking. The present lot is based on a design by Charles Cressent (1865-1768), the ébeniste to the Regent Philippe d'Orleans. The original sold at the Hamilton Palace sale in 1882 and is now at Waddesdon Manor; it is illustrated in Sir Anthony Blunt, The James A. De Rothschild Collection at Waddeson Manor, vol. I, 1974, p. 201.
