Catalogue Note

The present work has descended through the family of John Lindsay McCutcheon, a lawyer from Pittsburgh and a skilled chess player whose “McCutcheon Variation” of the classic French Defense enabled his 1885 besting of then world champion player Willem Steinitz and is still used today.
