Catalogue Note

Klinger completed the present work in Brussels in 1879.  At the age of only twenty-two the artist had begun one of his most productive periods having already published his first complete cylce of lithographs, Rettungen Ovidischer Opfer, Opus II. Like the present work, which depicts Ariadne being approached by the lustful Dionysus, these lithographs also illustrate mythological scenes (German Master Drawings, exh. cat., n.p.).
