Catalogue Note
Stafford was probably the natural son of Sir George Carew, Earl of Totnes, and served under him as a Captain in the wars of Ireland at the end of Elizabeth's reign. In 1629 he inherited Carew's large collection of Irish-related manuscripts, including the original of Pacata Hibernia. The list of plates calls for 17 maps only; the present copy has an additional plan of Carigfoyle Castle, at p.66. The folding Speed map and one other are uncoloured.
