Catalogue Note
The Coleccion contains ordenzas issued by two bishops of Michoacan: Marcos Ramirez de Prado (1639-1666) and Juan de Ortega Montañez, Inquisitor of the Tribunal del Santo Oficio de México and Viceroy of New Spain in 1696. The ordenzas address issues such as the relationship between the clergy and secular authorities and the need to protect the native population from abuse while also laying down procedures for dealing with those who fail to fulfil their religious obligations or resist indoctrination.
