Oblong folio (278 x 375mm.), 25 albumen prints (from 115 x 187mm. to 215 x 278mm., or the reverse), individually mounted on thick card, recto only, each captioned in ink in French on the mount, tissue guards, bound with: a menu in French printed in gold for a banquet on the eve of the opening of the Suez Canal, 2 lithographed tickets, a letterpress broadsheet in French with a list of horse races on 22 November 1869 in honour of the Emperor of Austria, and a large folding lithographed broadsheet of the same races in Arabic, contemporary brown half morocco over brown cloth boards, upper cover lettered in gilt, the Arabic broadsheet with short tears, extremities slightly rubbed

Including 11 rare photographs of the construction and opening of the Suez Canal and Port Said, and rare related ephemera: 5 photographs signed, captioned and dated (1869) in the negative by Justin Kozlowski (a Polish photographer with a studio in Port Said), and 2 photographs by Schier and Schoefft (Austrian photographers with a studio in Alexandria) after paintings by A. Bousseston, showing the Suez Canal in 1867. Together with 12 photographs of the Holy Land and Lebanon, including: Beirut, the "Tower of the Forty" at Ramleh, views of Jerusalem, the Holy Sepulchre and the Mosque of Omar.
