Literature

Blackmer 1276; Weber II 821 (but with wrong collation); not in Atabey but cf. 934

Catalogue Note

A rare work, inspired by the Venetian successes against the Turks in Greece. The views, plans and maps are of the Adriatic, Greece, the Near and Middle East and India, and include Corfu, Cephalonia, the Morea, Athens, Crete, the Greek islands, Cyprus, Palestine, Arabia (Mocha, Aden and Muscat), Iraq and Persia.

This copy has 114 plates, apparently the most complete copy extant, but it is likely that the number varies
. The Blackmer copy had 112, speculating that there should be 115, but admitting the possibility that the figure could be as high as 139 (the number of places mentioned in the text). The Gennadius copy also has 112 plates (Weber’s collation is wrong), but of a slightly different composition to Blackmer.

Apart from the Blackmer copy (sold in these rooms 11 October 1989, lot 255), there is only one other copy recorded at auction on ABPC in over thirty-five years, with just 78 plates (sale in these rooms, 14 October 2003, lot 700).
