Catalogue Note

Rare. Edwin Lyon worked in Dublin and Liverpool as a sculptor and wax modeller. The book is dedicated to John Foster and C.R. Cockerell, who discovered the Aegina marbles, the originals of which are now in Munich. Casts of the sculptures were, however, presented to the Liverpool Royal Institution by John Foster.

The plates include two reconstructions of the Temple of Panhellenian Jove at Aegina, together with fourteen plates depicting various figures from the temple. A review of the book by the Liverpool Mercury stated that "lovers of art have now an opportunity of enriching their libraries with a copy of a work which we do not hesitate to say is not only highly honourable to the talent of the artist, but commendable to the town where the work has been executed; and we strongly recommend these faithful copies of some of the finest specimens of ancient sculpture".
