Catalogue Note
Rare. Horeau (1801-1872) was a talented illustrator and architect and one of the first artists to use daguerreotypes. In 1837-1838 he travelled extensively throughout Egypt, producing on his return to France a work that provides an unusual combination of realistic views (for example the monuments of Cairo), architectural details and views of an ethnographic character. Many of the original watercolours engraved for this work are now in the Griffith Institute (University of Oxford). Only 2 copies are recorded as sold at auction on ABPC in the last 35 years.
