Catalogue Note

This is a poignant and remarkable inscription by Verdi, to a dear friend for over thirty years. Teresa Stolz (1834-1902) was a celebrated soprano, who sang for Verdi in La forza del destino and Aida (at the Italian premières of both) and at the première of the Requiem Mass.  The two were at one time very close, allegedly lovers, and certainly causing Verdi's wife Giuseppina much distress throughout the 1870s (see F. Walker The Man Verdi, 1962, passim).  She remained a lifelong friend of the composer (and eventually to Giuseppina too), entertaining him, or arranging his accommodation, whenever he came to Milan.
