Catalogue Note
Toscanini's first full season as an opera conductor was at the Teatro Del Verme in Milan, where he was engaged to direct Verdi's La forza del destino, Ponchielli's I promessi sposi, and Cagnoni's Francesca da Rimini in October 1888. It was also his conducting début in Milan. Toscanini's performances were well received and he was presented with a specially-bound volume of Beethoven's overtures as well as the present baton. Toscanini conducted the world première of Leoncavallo's Pagliacci at the Del Verme opera house in 1892.
