Catalogue Note
A photograph of this portrait appears in Renato Miracco, Maestro's Secret Music. The Artworks Collected by Arturo Toscanini (2007, see frontispiece), where it is captioned "Arturo Toscanini aged 25. Photograph retouched by his sister Ada". Whilst the portrait bears strong similarity to the photograph of c.1900 shown in Harvey Sachs, Toscanini (1978, facing page 118), in our opinion, this is an original art-work,painted directly onto porcelain. 1892 was the year that Toscanini conducted the world première of Leoncavallo's Pagliacci.
