Catalogue Note
Belasco's melodrama was the basis of Puccini's La Fanciulla del West, which premièred to a rapturous audience under Toscanini at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, in 1910 (in fact the first operatic première to take place there). Belasco oversaw the staging. Puccini himself considered it one of his finest works.
