a fair-copy manuscript, notated in black ink on mostly a single 19-stave system per page, signed at the head ("Ild. Pizzetti"), and signed and inscribed at the end ("Ild. Pizzetti a S. Lazzaro, Parmense, 27 di Marzo del [904]"), with an apparently non-autograph (?) title-page ("A Gustavo Salvini Per l'Edipo Re di Sofocle Tre intermezzi sinfonici di Ild. Pizzetti")

Pizzetti's first orchestral composition was the Ouverture per l’Edipo a Colono, dating from 1901, and which he dedicated to the celebrated tragic actor Gustavo Salvini. In 1903 Pizzetti was invited by Salvini to compose intermezzi for a production in Milan of Sophocles' Oedipus Rex. Many years later this music was recast into an orchestral suite designed for concert-hall performance.
