Catalogue Note
Giuseppe Martucci (1856-1909) was the most important non-operatic composer in nineteenth-century Italy, and his instrumental chamber music, especially works for cello, were inevitably of considerable interest to the young Toscanini. More particularly, Martucci was a great conductor himself, largely responsible for introducing Wagner's music to the Italians. "Toscanini, all his life, held Martucci in the highest regard as man and artist" (H. Sachs, p.30).
