Condition

Overall condition fairly good with colours remaining vibrant and image strong. There are areas where the medium has faded especially around the outer margins of the sheet. There is a tiny hole at the lower margin, towards the left, just below the man's scarf. Sold in a decorative hand painted Venetian frame. Has not been examined out of frame.

Catalogue Note

Giuseppe Nogari was a pupil of Antonio Balestra and was influenced by artists such as Piazzetta and Rembrandt.  He often depicted elderly men and woman in his works using a chiaroscuro and sfumato technique to evoke emotion and give a sense of character.
