Description

  • Tiffany Studios
  • A Rare Table Lamp Base
  • patinated bronze

Provenance

Sotheby's New York, December 6, 2002, lot 335

Condition

Overall in very good condition. The patinated bronze surfaces display a particularly rich and vibrant green and russet brown patina. The bronze surfaces throughout with minimal surface wear and rubbing to the patina consistent with age and gentle use. All of the upper components of the base, including the shade arm unit, decorative riser, telescoping knob and socket cluster all appear original to the base and undisturbed. The three sockets and paddle switches all appear original and undisturbed, and the sockets retain their original cardboard insulator liners. The telescoping device functions smoothly. The shade arms are sized to accommodate a 16-inch diameter shade. A superb example of this exceedingly rare base model.

Catalogue Note

The three shade arms are an integral unit, each measuring approximately 7  3/4  inches in length off of the central axis from which they extend. This base is designed to accommodate a 16 inch diameter shade. We paired the "Poinsettia" (lot 219) and the "Woodbine" shades (lot 253) in this sale, both 16 inches in diameter, and both fit comfortably with even a little room to spare.
