Condition

Overall in very good condition. The shade with only approximately 4 cracks to the glass tiles dispersed throughout, and with a few occasional small and minor surface flecks to some of the outermost contours of the exterior rippled glass. Some of the recessed contours and folds of the glass embedded with surface soiling. The rare “Flower Pot” base displays an exceptionally deep and rich russet brown patina with green highlights. The patinated bronze surfaces with some occasional light surface scratches, abrasions and gentle rubbing consistent with age and gentle use. The shade arms with minor rubbing to the interior ends of each arm from continued surface contact over the years with the shade. This base was originally designed as an oil lamp and was converted in the period to electricity. Thus, the central socket and paddle switch fitted atop the oil canister are old period replacements. (The oil canister and base were fortunately not drilled at the time of conversion, and the electrical cord extends from the top of the oil canister.) The period drop finial with one very small and minor surface indentation to the outer perimeter. A beautiful example of this rare model, displaying the most desirable shade and base pairing. The shade displays a strong, heavily saturated glass selection distinguished by the rich magenta blossoms and vigorously mottled and striated glass which delineates the foliage below.

Catalogue Note

Like the Poinsettia, the Geranium is a non-native plant whose presence in the American domestic landscape is symbolized by a specific seasonal motif, in this case rows of potted plants lining the borders of garden patios in the late summer and brought indoors in the winter.  Tiffany Studios captured this popular American convention with their design for a “Geranium” lamp shade and “Flower Pot” base.  The present lot is a rare example demonstrating both the original source of the firm’s inspiration and what is considered today as the most desirable pairing for the model.
