Description

  • Tiffany Studios
  • A Rare "Turtle-Back Diver's" Lantern
  • impressed TIFFANY STUDIOS/NEW YORK/7911
  • favrile glass and patinated bronze

Provenance

Lillian Nassau, New York

Condition

Overall in very good condition. All of the “Turtle Back” tiles appear to be original and undisturbed, with no visible cracks. One of the glass tiles has a shallow surface fleck to one corner of the tile adjacent to the leading (½ x ½ inch triangular area), and there is subtle movement to the glass in this corner. As a precautionary measure this small area would benefit from being stabilized by a professional Tiffany or glass restorer. The adjacent tile above with a few very small surface abrasions/flecks to the glass. The painted surfaces of the shade leading with surface wear, rubbing, and small scattered losses throughout. The patinated bronze surfaces of the base and handle with some occasional surface scratches, abrasions and rubbing consistent with age and use, and some minor traces of light surface oxidation and discoloration to the adjoining collar between the base and shade. The lantern appears to retain its original bronze decorative base switch which is fully functional and the interior socket. With surface soiling to the interior. The underside with four old felt glides. The upper handle moves freely and can be positioned resting downward to rest on top of the lantern (in the catalogue illustration it is positioned upward as if being suspended). The Turtleback tiles are intensely iridized, and when viewed with reflected light display superb luminous color in a range of highly saturated jewel tones. When seen with remitted light from the interior these tiles emit a deep emerald green glow. A fantastic object with great sculptural presence and visual interest.
