Catalogue Note

This extraordinary embodiment of Art Nouveau design, model no. 1223 in the 1906 Price List of Tiffany Studios, would appear to have been inspired by the fantastical and aquatic species drawn by the German biologist Ernst Haeckel in his influential Kunstformen der Natur, which was published between 1899-1904 and which inspired numerous artists including Émile Gallé and Karl Blossfeldt.  One of the most artistic candlesticks produced by Tiffany Studios, a pair is in the collection of the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University, and other examples were formerly in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Louis C. Tiffany Garden Museum, Japan.
