Patek Philippe launched reference 5040 in 1992. According to our research, approximately 450 examples of this model were produced in pink gold. The present lot is only the seventh known from the first series of production.

The first series bear movements numbered 770000 and up. Examples belonging to the second series of the reference have movements numbers starting at 3120000. The two series are also distinguished by the leap year indicator, which is fully sunken and 'crossed' in second series examples, and only sunken in the uncrossed center in first series examples.

For an example of reference 5040, see Huber, M. & Banbery, A., Patek Philippe Wristwatches, Vol. 2, Second Edition, p. 295.
