ferrotyped, signed with a stylus on the image, signed in red crayon and with annotations in pencil and ink, the photographer's estate and copyright stamps, and typed 'Imago Photo Service Paris / Agence de Photos de Presse' label on the reverse, framed, the Buhl Collection label on the reverse, early 1930s
Provenance
James Danziger Gallery, New York, 1997
Condition
This ferrotyped print is in generally good to very good condition. The corners are bumped and creased, with a small loss to the tip of the upper right corner. The edges are rubbed, with resultant chipping. In raking light, a number of soft and sharp creases are visible, some of which break the emulsion. Also visible in raking light are a few scuffs and surface scratches, primarily in the central left and right portions of the image. Upon close examination, a small deposit of original retouching is visible in the skull's eye cavity.
On the reverse of the print are the following notations: 'H3925 Après'; 'VO'; 'Rg'; 'LBG' (circled); and 'Re_ Sel_' (illegible). The reverse of the print is lightly soiled. There are brown paper adhesions along the upper edge on the reverse, indicating that this print was likely previously affixed to a mount.
