Condition
Window mounted. Overall in good condition with colors remaining fresh. Slight foxing mainly visible aroung the Virgin and Child and in the upper right hand corner of the sheet. There are two brown stains towards the right hand side of the sheet one directly behind the head of the kneeling figure and one at the back of his garment/cloak.

Catalogue Note
The present drawing, of a subject which Piola treated on many occasions, does not appear to relate directly to one of his painted compositions. The grouping of figures can be linked to that in a drawing by him, sold in these Rooms in 2012.1 The use of colored washes here is somewhat unusual as Piola's preparatory studies are predominantly executed in pen and ink and brown wash.
We are grateful to Dr. Mary Newcome Schleier, who has seen the drawing in the original, for confirming the attribution and for suggesting that, stylistically, this appears to be a late work.
