Catalogue Note

Drawn from a posed male model, this study may have served Furini for one of his paintings of the Penitent Magdalene.  The approach to describing the figure, with a strong outline, is also seen in many of the large number of Furini's studies now in the Uffizi, particularly, for example, the Seated Nude with a Jar, which is preparatory for a figure in his fresco in the Palazzo Pitti.1

The studies on the verso, for an intimate composition of the Madonna and Child, cannot be connected with a surviving painting.  The same technique of making various small framed compositional studies on the same page can also be found in Furini drawings in the Uffizi.2
