Canvas loose, retightening recommended. Minor, scattered, nicely executed retouchings visible under uv-light, to the centre-right on the sleeve, slightly more pronouned in the lower part on the tablecloth and along the lower, left edge.

Catalogue Note
1894, im Jahr nach seiner Rückkehr aus Pont-Aven in der Bretagne, malte der 26-jährige Künstler einige Porträts von Familienmitgliedern, darunter dieses Bildnis von Emilie Amiet-Baer, die Josef Ignaz Amiet nach dem Tode seiner ersten Frau, der Mutter von Cuno Amiet, geheiratet hatte. Sie stammte aus der Familie eines Seidenfabrikanten in Rifferswil am Albis und führte am Friedhofplatz in Solothurn ein Geschäft für Textilwaren. Stil und Komposition des Gemäldes reflektieren in seiner bewussten Asymmetrie und der malerischen Strukturierung durch die verschiedenen dekorativen Dessins die bedeutenden Erfahrungen, die Amiet soeben im Kreis der Künstler um Gauguin und der Nabis gemacht hatte. Noch stiess er damit auf allgemeines Unverständnis, das in den folgenden Jahrzehnten dann einer wachsenden Bewunderung weichen sollte, die den ehemaligen jungen Avantgardisten zum gefeierten Maler der Schweizer Moderne werden liess.
