Catalogue Note

The offered work was executed during Shukhaev's Paris period (1919-1935), when he sketched the portraits of many members of the Mir iskusstva group, such as Alexander Yakovlev and other Russian celebrities including Anna Pavlova.

Gavril Paichadze (1883-1976) was a close friend of Shukhaev and a leading figure in the Russian émigré community in France after 1917. An editor, intellectual and art collector, he worked ceaselessly to promote Russian musical culture throughout his new homeland, most notably at the helm of a publishing house specialising in Russian musical manuscripts for over 20 years, where he published the works of Stravinsky and Prokofiev.

Shukhaev's precise and expressive rendering of his model's features is characteristic of his sanguine portraits - in the words of the German literary critic Paul Barchan, he was the 'child of Russian naturalism'. The offered lot displays the influence of Dmitri Kardovsky, Shukhaev's teacher at the Imperial Academy, as well as his quest for a style which broke away from popular artistic trends in Europe at the time.
