Catalogue Note
On emigrating to Paris in 1924, Zinaida Serebriakova was able to develop her great skill at draughtsmanship, especially through the study of the female form. In the offered lot, the artist employs bold pastel strokes to represent a nude reclining on a blue fabric; as in many of her nude studies, the model is the artist’s daughter Katya. The use of greens and browns to enrich the colour palette, along with the nude’s loosely sketched features and dark line which contours her sensual pose, adds to the expressive qualities of this work.
