Condition

The sheet has slightly discoloured; there is a small tear in the lower left corner and a surface scratch top right, 10cm from the right hand edge. There are spots of foxing, most notably to the lower left hand corner. The paper is smudged in places and there are some handling marks to the bottom of the composition. Held in a modern wooden frame and under glass.

Catalogue Note

The artists depicted are (clockwise from left to right) Leonid Pozen, Efim Volkov, Alexander Litovchenko, Ivan Shishkin, Nikolai Yaroshenko, Grigory Myasoedov, Konstantin Savitsky, Mikhail Klodt, Ivan Kramskoy and Vasily Maximov.

In his 1937 listing of Repin's work, Grabar states that the offered drawing is incorrectly dated 1876. It is likelyl the offered work was completed in the mid 1880s, since Pozen only joined the Peredvizhniki in 1882.


Oleg Zinger is best known for his illustrations of animals and graphic design. He emigrated to Berlin with his family in 1926, where he studied at the School of Applied Arts and took lessons from the sculptor and animalier Vasily Vatagin (1884-1969) when the latter visited the German capital in 1932. Following the publication of a glowing article in Nikolai Zaretsky’s magazine Gebrauchsgraphic. Zinger began receiving offers of work from around Europe, which included commissions for artwork from London Underground. In 1950 he moved to France, where he began to put together his own collection of Russian art.
