Description

the faces finely painted, the oklad repoussé decorated with floral motifs, the Virgin's halo centred with a crown of coloured pastes, St Tatiana standing full length on the right border, the text in niello below citing the Troparion for the feastday of the Kazanskaya Mother of God, marked with unidentified maker's mark IT (Latin), 84 standard

Condition

Then icon covered with dirt and covered varnish, some minor damage due to the silver oklad. The top of the crown with pastes missing, one further paste stone missing.

Catalogue Note

Inscription on the reverse reads:

 'This holy icon of the Holy Mother of Kazan was presented on 17th November 1891 in Tula, painted on a cypress board more than 100 years ago. The silver-gilt oklad was made in 1795 and its kiot made out of red wood with gilding, under glass. It was presented by the tradeswoman Elizabeth Yegorovna Sheldyaeva to the Monastery Rossikon on the Holy Mount Athos to the holy Great Martyr and Healer Panteleimon. The  icon was inherited as a blessing from her father Yegor Osipovich and her Mother Tatiana Mikhailovna Sushkin in honour of the blessed marriage with Ivan Ivanovich Sheldyaev in memory of the passing of George, John 2, Tatiana 2, Elizabeth 2, Paraskeva, baby Alexander and for the good health of Elizabeth, Merkul, Catherine, Mary, Alexandra and all her relatives.The grandaunt of Father Archimandrit Makarij Sushkin'.
