Catalogue Note

Alexey Sotnikov (1904-1989) was one of the most renowned Soviet ceramic sculptors. In 1928-1931 he studied ceramics in VKhUTEIN in Moscow under V. Tatlin who significantly influenced Sotnikov's life and career. In the 1930s he began working for Dulevo porcelain factory where he became a Chief Artist in 1958. Sotnikov was primarily interested in the creation of tableware and figurines, which are remarkable for their monumentality, unusual for this type of plastic arts. His contribution made Dulevo porcelain world famous and Sotnikov's best known work titled "Falcon" was adapted as Dulevo factory's mark.
