- Crossing the River
- signed in Latin l.r.
oil on canvas
- 70.2 by 90.5cm, 27 1/2 by 35 1/2 in.
Provenance
Sotheby's London, Russian Art, 27 November 2007, lot 160
Condition
Original canvas. The surface of the canvas is dirty and the vanish has discoloured. There is a small chip of paint loss to the centre of the river and flecks of paint loss to the bottom right and left corner. There are fine lines of craquelure and a further vertical line to the centre of the river, possibly from a stretcher mark. There is a small indentation to the lower right hand quadrant. UV light reveals area of retouching to the left side of the sky and the top right corner and it seems there has been further infilling at an earlier stage in the centre of the sky with further minor spots of infilling elsewhere. Held in a wooden frame with mouldings. Unexamined out of frame.
