The canvas is unlined and slightly rippled. The surface of the work is in fair condition. The varnish has separated an unevenly congealed in several areas, most noticeably along the left side, along the bottom, and in a vertical band through the center. This may be difficult to remove and should be examined by a professional conservator. A few abrasions and associated paint loss upper left, a scratch through the dog's hind quarters, smaller abrasions lower right and behind the dog's front feet. A small pin-sized hole near the upper right corner, and a second possible repaired hole along the the dog's front legs. Under UV: evidence of a previous unsuccessful attempt to remove the varnish along the left edge at center, with associated repaint.
