Drypoint, c. 1894, an intermediate state between Breeskin's third and fourth (of five) and between Mathews & Shapiro's eighth and ninth (of ten), a rare impression printed without the aquatint plate, signed in pencil, on laid paper, framed

Condition

The sheet is fully lined with Japan to strengthen several areas of thinning in the plate, including a skillfully repaired tear in the mother's hair (measuring approx. 1 3/4 in.), horizontal creases across the upper and lower margins, and losses and tears at the sheet edges contained to the margins. The imperfections in the plate are mainly visible when the sheet is held against a bright light, apart from a pin-hole at the plate top at center. Pale discoloration in the sheet comprises light-stain and uneven staining in the margins. The pencil signature is faded.
