Description

  • Paul Strand
  • 'VIRGIN, OAXACA, MEXICO'
  • Gelatin silver print
the photographer's printing notations in pencil on the reverse, flush-mounted, titled, dated, credited, and initialed by Hazel Strand in pencil and a Light Gallery stamp, with number '76.017' in pencil, on the reverse, 1933, probably printed in the late 1950s or early 1960s (Greenough, p. 99, from the same series)

Provenance

Estate of Paul Strand

Acquired by the present owner from Light Gallery, 1980

Condition

As is frequently seen with Paul Strand's photographs, this print has the photographer's extensive printing notations written on the reverse. Because the print is flush-mounted to thick paper, these are only partially visible. The following notations can be made out at various places on the reverse: 'ill. Spec.' (Kodak Illustrator's Special printing paper), 'f.6.3' and '28' (the aperture setting for the enlarging lens and the exposure time in seconds for the print), 'shadows shaded,' and 'amidol' (the paper developer used). This somewhat cool-toned print, on lightly textured paper with a very fine surface sheen, is in generally excellent condition. In raking light, a few tiny deposits of original retouching are visible. The black margin edges and corners are rubbed, with attendant tiny losses of emulsion. On the reverse of the print, '#203-C' is written in an unidentified hand in pencil.

Catalogue Note

According to Strand authority Anthony Montoya, Strand made this photograph with an 8 x 10-inch Corona view camera.  It is believed that the print offered here is one of 2 extant prints of the image, both contact prints from the negative.  Aside from the present print, there is an early platinum print in the collection of The Philadelphia Museum of Art.
