Description

  • Wynn Bullock
  • CHILD IN FOREST
  • Gelatin silver print
mounted, signed in pencil on the mount, 1951 (Wynn Bullock 55, pp. 22-23; Dilley, pl. 1, variant)

Condition

This luminous early print is in generally excellent condition. There is an astonishing level of detail visible in this open print that is not apparent in later renderings of this image. Pervasive silvering is visible, save for an approximately 7-by-7-inch section near the center of the print that is not affected. Upon very close examination, a tiny, transparent, matte deposit of indeterminate nature is visible in the upper left quadrant. None of these issues detracts from the otherwise very attractive quality of this photograph. This print is mounted to thin beige card. On the reverse of the mount, '83.0.9.2' is written in an unidentified hand in pencil. When examined under ultraviolet light, this print appears to fluoresce.

Catalogue Note

Child in Forest, featuring Wynn Bullock's daughter Barbara, is one of two photographs with this title from two slightly different negatives.  More often reproduced is the alternate study that does not feature the crown-like fern above the sitter's head, as is visible in print offered here.

Beginning in the early 1950s, Bullock began to approach photography through the visual expression of opposites.  Of this image, Bullock commented, 'It was an ancient virginal forest.  Barbara was a young virginal child.  I knew immediately the qualities of her body would both contrast and harmonize beautifully with the qualities of the dead logs and living plants of the forest' (Bullock 55, p. 22).
