  • THE SLEIGH
  • Quarter-plate daguerreotype
quarter-plate daguerreotype, cased, circa 1850

Condition

This quarter-plate daguerreotype shows a two-horse sleigh thrown into stark relief against a solarized background. Remarkably, the horses are very clearly delineated here, their dark flanks reflecting the day's bright sun. Also very clear are the sleigh's driver, the top-hatted gentleman behind the conveyance, and the partially obscured man holding the head of the one of the horses. The snowy background is rendered in cool blue tones. A row of bare trees and the dim, ghostly outlines of houses can be made out in the background. The plate is in quite good condition. When examined closely, some faint warm-toned areas of tarnish can be seen across the image. This plate lacks a seal and is attached to the mat and glass with two pieces of cellotape.
