  • GREEK REVIVAL BUILDING
  • Quarter-plate daguerreotype
quarter-plate daguerreotype, with a modern seal, cased, 1840s

Condition

This bold and clear daguerreotype is in excellent condition. The handling of the composition and exposure show the daguerreotypist's artistic sensibilities and technical proficiency. The detail on the building is considerable, and the image has the wonderful three-dimensionality of the best daguerreotypes. When viewed in angled light, the hues in this uncolored plate shift from light gold to pale rose. The plate has a modern paper-tape seal that dates to 1977. The case is separated at the hinge.
