Provenance

Acquired from The Time Is Always Now, New York, 1998

Condition

Another unique version of this image appears in Photofile as pl. 51. This print has not been viewed out of its frame, but it appears to be in very good condition. As is typical of prints that have ink inscriptions and have been painted with blood, there is some waviness in the paper. In raking light, a matte area of what appears to be retouching is visible in Nguyu's clothing. The 5 small photographs that have been collaged onto the print at the upper right edge are of tribesmen dancing; a hunter seated on the ground with his prey; a hunter holding open a hippopotamus's mouth; and 2 images of elephant bones. The ink inscription, 'Infinite Greetings and heartfelt appreciations Always, Peter Beard to Renny, Hog Ranch, Box 47616 Nairobi, Kenya,' and the image of a hand, drawn in ink by the photographer, have faded somewhat. A quotation at the upper left edge is from 'Paradise Lost' and reads: "But past who can recall or done undo." The inscription by Peter Tunney, owner of The Time Is Always Now Gallery, New York, reads: 'Dear Renny, Leaving (Sat. 6pm) in major haste - just two last words. . . THANK YOU! for everything - deep apologies for all messes at Villa Corina - Lots of Love, P. T. T. Call us when you get back from Brazil! P. S. Examine other side carefully. 3/28/98 - Oscar week!'
