Catalogue Note
Pierre Sabsout de Varick était le fils de Pierre de Varick, bourgmestre de Delft. Il épousa Lucrèce de Campomenoso (1595-1653). Lucrèce était la fille de Cipriano Campomenoso, un marchand de Gênes qui s'installa à Anvers et y connut un grand succès. Dans une lettre au magistrat de Gênes datant du 10 octobre 1576, le consul de Gênes le décrit comme un marchand bien établi dans la ville depuis plusieurs années déjà. Les archives expliquent en effet que Cipriano traitait avec des marchands italiens de Gênes ainsi que certains installés à Londres entre 1574 et 1578. La famille fut ensuite élevée à la noblesse par l'empereur Matthias le 9 september 1615.
De cette alliance naquit Pierre-Cyprien de Varick, écuyer, seigneur de Carmin et de Dieval, grand-bailli de Lille, et chevalier d'honneur au conseil souverain de Tournay, créé chevalier
par lettres du 29 mai 1652.
The arms are those of van VARICK, of Gueldre impaling those of CAMPOMINOSO, of Anvers (Antwerp).
Pierre Sabsout de Varick was the son of Pierre de Varick, burgmestre of Delft. He married Lucrèce de Campomenoso (1595-1653). She was the daughter of Cipriano Campomenoso, a merchant from Genoa who settled in Antwerp and became successful. In a letter to the magistrate of Genoa on 10th October 1576, the consul of Genoa described him as
as merchent well-established in teh city for many years. The archives mentionned indeed taht he was trading with Italiens merchants, from Genoa but also from London, between 1574-1578. The family was ennobled on 9th September 1615 by the Emperor Matthias.
Pierre and Lucrece had a son, Pierre-Cyprien de Varick, écuyer, seigneur de Carmin et de Dieval, grand-bailli de Lille, et chevalier d'honneur au conseil souverain de Tournay, who was created knight on 29 May 1652.
